WhatsApp for iOS is receiving support for access keys, enabling users to swap the password for a more secure authentication method. The feature was previously exclusive to Android users but is now being introduced to iPhone users by Meta.

Access keys, also referred to as passkeys, were created by the FIDO Alliance in partnership with various companies like Google, Apple, and Microsoft. This technology enables users to access applications without the need for passwords, and provides the option to utilize biometrics like digital or facial recognition for authentication.
To utilize access keys on your iPhone, you must have iOS 16 or newer installed along with Safari or iCloud Keychain apps. In iOS 17, this functionality has been expanded to third-party apps, enabling unlocking through Face ID or Touch ID.

WhatsApp introduced email verification as an alternative to SMS for validating logins in November 2023 to enhance security, as relying on phone numbers poses a higher risk of being cloned.
